Perception

What is perception?

Perception (from the Latin perceptio, percipio) is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical or chemical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retina of the eye, smell is mediated by odor molecules, and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but is shaped by learning, memory, expectation, and attention. Perception involves these "top-down" effects as well as the "bottom-up" process of processing sensory input. The "bottom-up" processing transforms low-level information to higher-level information (e.g., extracts shapes for object recognition). The "top-down" processing refers to a person's concept and expectations (knowledge), and selective mechanisms (attention) that influence perception. Perception depends on complex functions of the nervous system, but subjectively seems mostly effortless because this processing happens outside conscious awareness.

Since the rise of experimental psychology in the 19th Century, psychology's understanding of perception has progressed by combining a variety of techniques. Psychophysics quantitatively describes the relationships between the physical qualities of the sensory input and perception. Sensory neuroscience studies the brain mechanisms underlying perception. Perceptual systems can also be studied computationally, in terms of the information they process. Perceptual issues in philosophy include the extent to which sensory qualities such as sound, smell or color exist in objective reality rather than in the mind of the perceiver.

Although the senses were traditionally viewed as passive receptors, the study of illusions and ambiguous images has demonstrated that the brain's perceptual systems actively and pre-consciously attempt to make sense of their input. There is still active debate about the extent to which perception is an active process of hypothesis testing, analogous to science, or whether realistic sensory information is rich enough to make this process unnecessary.

The perceptual systems of the brain enable individuals to see the world around them as stable, even though the sensory information is typically incomplete and rapidly varying. Human and animal brains are structured in a modular way, with different areas processing different kinds of sensory information. Some of these modules take the form of sensory maps, mapping some aspect of the world across part of the brain's surface. These different modules are interconnected and influence each other. For instance, the taste is strongly influenced by its odor.

Why does perception vary from person to person?

Based on personal experiences and beliefs we create our perceptions on particular things, that is why they are differed. in essence your perception becomes your reality.

Belief  - 'mental acceptance of a proposition, statement, or fact, as true, on the ground of apparent authority, which does not have to be based on actual fact. ”  Assent to a proposition or affirmation, or the acceptance of a fact, opinion, or assertion as real or true, without immediate personal knowledge; reliance upon word or testimony; partial or full assurance without positive knowledge or absolute certainty; persuasion; conviction; confidence; as, belief of a witness; the belief of our senses a religious doctrine that is proclaimed as true without proof

(PhysOrg.com) -- Advances in cognitive neuroscience (the science of how the brain works when we think) have shown that what our eyes see and what our brain interprets are two different things. Professor Guillaume Thierry, Dr Panos Athanasopoulos and colleagues report in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that our language causes our brains to perceive colours differently.

To see whether language shapes our biological and physiological processes of colour perception, the researchers used a technique called event related brain potentials (ERPs). This technique tracks activity in the brain millisecond by millisecond.

Professor Thierry explains: “We know that the visual system in our brain begins processing stimuli like colour a few tens of milliseconds after light has hit the retina of the eye. We also know that language consciously invades our thinking about 200 milliseconds later. Using ERPs, we are able to look at very early stages of visual analysis, well before conscious language information is accessed.”

The researchers found differences in visual processing of light and dark blues between Greek and English speakers as early as 100 milliseconds, suggesting that indeed, speakers of different languages literally have differently structured minds.

A Story of Maya

There was once a handsome young sage named Narada. He was devoted to god ad well versed in holy books. In one of these he came across a word, Maya, that was not clear to him. ‘Ah! What does it mean by Maya?” He said to himself as he went through the book again and again. Finally he shut it with a bang. “No, I don’t understand”, he said to himself, ‘and there’s no rest for me till I do”. He searched many books, consulted many scholars, but was not satisfied. What shall I do? Who can help me ?” he thought. Then suddenly he jumped to his feet. “Why, I must go to my Lord, my master Krishna”, he cried out “he would certainly know”. So he left for Dwarka where Krishna lived.
Krishna welcomed him heartily. “It’s very nice of you Narada”, said Krishna embracing him But my child”, he continued,’ it seems you aren’t at peace. What’s the matter?”
“Yes, my Lord”. Said Narada humbly “I have come to you with a problem”
What is it Narada?” asked Krishna
“Lord I couldn’t find the meaning of the word Maya. Please do explain it to me”, replied Narada with folded hands, “show me what Maya is .”
Krishna laughed aloud . ”Is that all that troubles you, my boy?” “Well surely you‘ll understand what Maya is but not now, you must be tired stay few days and take rest”
“It’s a blessing for me, Lord to be in your company”, Narada said.
A few days passed, but Narada did not get his answer. He grew restless but hesitated to remind Krishna. One day Krishna asked him to make a trip with him to a distant place. After walking several miles all day Krishna said, “narada I ‘m thirsty can you fetch me some water?”
“At once sir” said Narada and rushed off. At a little distance was a village and he knocked at the door of the nearest hut, which was opened by a most beautiful young girl.
“Ah! What divine beauty “, he muttered as he gazed upon her. The girl blushed and lowering her eyes, said in a sweet voice, ”Please do come in Sir, and tell me what can i do for you?”
Like one hypnotized, Narada stepped in and sat down, but could say nothing. He forgot his purpose of coming; he forgot his master was waiting; he forgot everything for one thought: ”What beauty she is, I must have her as my wife and I ‘ll be the happiest person“.
Girl left the room and sent her father. An old man with a white beard greeted Narada:”Welcome sir to my poor home. I’m honoured to have you as my guest. Please stay with us as long as you like”. Narada never expected such an invitation and was only too glad to accept it.
He found many opportunities to talk to her and talk ripened into love. One day he ask her, “Will you marry me?”
The girl blushed softly replied “…. only if my father agrees”
“I ‘ll talk to him right now”, said Narada and rushed inside to meet the old man.  Narada sat, rubbed his hands, scratched his head, and then started: “Well sir,… I have a proposal …er… request to you … i ‘d like to ….er.. will you give us your consent…well…your daughter …and…er..I..I mean…”
Old man laughed and said “I understood. If my daughter agrees you ‘ll have my blessings”.
But my son I have a request “after the marriage, please stay here with me” Narada agreed promptly and happily. On an auspicious day Narada was married to the girl and both were immensely happy.
Thus twelve years passed. His father- in law died. Narada inherited his property. He lived as it seemed to him a very happy life with his wife and children, his fields and cattle.
One night he woke up suddenly to a fearful sound. “Oh! That’s thunder”, he said to himself, looking out through the window. “let thunder roar, lighting flash, rain pour, I ‘m safe and dry and happy in my house with my dear wife and lovely children”. And he dropped asleep again.
But his happiness did not last long. Soon there was a flood. The river rose until it overflowed its banks and flooded the whole village. Houses fell, men and animals are swept away and drowned, and everything was floating in the rush of the stream. Narada woke up once again hearing the screams of his children, jumped out of bed and opened the door. The sight that met his eyes turned his face ashen. “O God, O God spare my home”, he cried out but his voice was lost in the gush of water that entered his home.
Narada had to escape. With one hand he held his wife, and with the other two of his children; another child was on his shoulder, and he was trying to ford the tremendous flood. His evil star led him to a wrong place. After a few step she found, the current was too strong, and the child on his shoulder fell and was swept away. A cry of despair came from Narada. In trying to save that child, he lost his grasp upon the other two, and they were also lost. In helpless anger and despair he poured out a volley of oaths. Clinging to each other, husband and wife struggled on.
But alas, his dear wife, whom he clasped with all his might, was also torn away by the cruel current, and he was thrown on the bank weeping in bitter lamentation.
“O,Lord, what have I done that you gave me this punishment? What use is this life to me now?” Narada kept on lamenting, “Kill me too, O cruel one!”
Suddenly there came a gentle voice from behind him: “My child, where’s the water? You went to fetch water and have been gone for half an hour “.
“Half an Hour !! Narada exclaimed heaving himself up on his legs. “Who says this?” he turned to see. “O Lord, YOU! Twelve whole years have passed and all these things have happened and you say half an hour!”
Krishna smiled, “Narada, my son I thought you wanted to know what Maya is; and this is MAYA”

Symbolically Narada moving away from Krishna is like we moving away the Supreme Truth and getting entangled in fleeing pleasures. Try to solve the puzzle of happiness when we are pure bliss.

Perceiving Mind from a different Point.

Mind is a Mixture of Panjaboothas (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Sky) When any one of the boothas is not there , the mind dies . The mind can perceive all the  same five elements in different forms. The ratio is formed based on the previous  Karma( ACTION). We can say that the body is in fact a microcosm of the macrocosm-the Universe
Microsmic mind is connected by the same primal elements panjaboothas to the macrosmic-Universe so mind  can move anwhere in the Universe in no time . All the vedic laws regulate a smooth and balanced relationship between the macrosmic and microsmic mind  . If we live against the nature it has its own plans to restore it.

The Convergence of Science and Spirituality

Before you can understand why, how, and where physics and metaphysics will converge, you must understand exactly what is meant by physics and metaphysics. Metaphysics is basically the philosophical study of being and knowing. Metaphysics is very closely related to spirituality, but it is not religious. On the other hand, when I talk about physics I am not really talking about the old Newtonian physics that many of us were taught in school. Instead, I am talking more about the leading edge sciences that are, in my opinion, currently expanding the previous limits of science, mainly quantum physics (the science where physics and metaphysics merge)

Why / Where Metaphysics and Physics are about to Merge?
Science and spirituality have a very close relationship. Metaphysics / spirituality and science are really two complimentary ways of looking at reality. Therefore as we get closer to the truth, physics and metaphysics must merge, or in other words, science will meet spirit.
The main difference between science and spirituality was:
·  true spirituality you look within
·  traditional scientists look to external sources
But now, scientists are beginning to look within, to solve external scientific problems, because almost every day new information is coming out that does not make sense under the old science (such as psychic phenomenon). Scientists are now beginning to go straight to the real source, which is the same source that supplies metaphysics. Therefore, it is inevitable that physics and metaphysics merge.
“It was very important that, a long time ago, we made the decision to separate spirit from science. And so we were able to learn how to do science. But now we’ve learned, and we can take on the richer task of learning to do science when consciousness is part of the experiment.” -William Tiller, Ph.D.

Science’s approach to The Truth
The initial goal of science was, of course, not to separate science and spirit, but instead to understand nature. In early/ancient civilizations science and spirituality were meant to compliment each other and nature. Scientists wanted to understand nature, so they could live in harmony with it, not so they could dominate it. Only until the middle of the 16th century did this really change.
Materialism, which is the theory that physical matter is the only reality and that everything, including thought, feeling, mind, and will, can be explained in terms of matter and physical phenomena brought about the separation between science and spirit. Since, under this way of thinking, physical well-being and worldly possessions became the greatest good and had the highest value in life. The world was thought of as a machine, and there was no need for God or metaphysics / spirituality.
Then in the early 20th century, scientist like Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrödinger and other founders of quantum theory proved that it was not a material world at all. Many of the founders of quantum even had an interest in spiritual matters. They discovered that the physical universe is essentially non-physical. It seems to arise from a field that is even more subtle than energy, a field that seems to be more like intelligence or consciousness than matter. As you may know, these are ancient metaphysical teachings, and metaphysicians have no problems with these ideas. Even though, much of the scientific community does. And, once materialism is gone, the convergence of science and spirituality can begin again.

How Physics and Metaphysics Will Merge?
Although, it is not certain exactly how the convergence of science and spirit will take place, there are many ideas as to how and when this might happen. Some people believe that there will be a complete blending of one into the other. Others believe that they will continue to overlap and expand each other. Personally, I believe that through quantum physics, science will prove many of the ancient metaphysical / spiritual teachings (as it is already doing) and in the process we will see the convergence to science and spirit.
Or as Fred Allan Wolf, Ph.D. said:
“It isn’t a question of science bringing spirituality in. It’s more a question of expanding the circle within which both science and spirituality lie, so that the kind of question we can ask can be looked at from the different points of view that both science and spirituality bring to the table. It’s important to realize that the subject, the ‘inner space,’ is worthy of great exploration. It’s important to realize that the ways we explore the ‘inner space’ may not be the same ways that we explore ‘outer space.’ But the ways that we understand inner space may be greatly assisted by the ways that we understand the quantum nature of the physical world.”
In conclusion, everyday we are coming closer to seeing physics and metaphysics merge.

What Is Metaphysics?

Metaphysics is defined as the branch of philosophy that examines the true nature of reality, whether visible or invisible. Metaphysics includes the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, and, fact and value. Basically, metaphysics is the philosophical study of being and knowing.

Metaphysics is a broad-ranging philosophy, not a science!

It is closely related to spirituality, but it is not tied to any particular religion. However, it seems that "metaphysics" is deeply related to all religions in many ways.
